Original YouTube programs will be free in 2019 – / Movie

The good news: From next year, YouTube will pull out all its original content behind Premium Paywall, allowing users to enjoy an ad supported version of shows like Cobra Kai. The bad news: This feature also means that YouTube will not invest in so many scripting exhibitions without focusing on reality-driven projects led by celebrities and YouTube stars.

In an official statement (via Variety), YouTube hit all that kind of vague business language that contains phrases like "global fan base" and "YouTube generation" and so on:

"As we look forward to 2019, we continue to invest in scripting and switching to help our YouTube Originals ad support the growing demand for a more global fan base. This next phase of our original strategy will expand the audience of our original YouTube creators and give advertisers incredible content like reaching the YouTube generation. "

If you'd like to read the lines, you get a pretty clear picture of what happened here – YouTube Premium does not light the world on fire, so everyone involved rethinkes the type of content they want to create and how they want to earn it to their audience for billions. After all, Cobra Kai was extremely well received when it appeared earlier this year, but other YouTube originals have landed with a lump. Does anyone talk about his new science fiction series, Origin? Nah.

Of course, it does not mean that written TV is dead on YouTube. Earlier this year they were renewed Impulse, Step up: High water, Mind Field, foursome, Ryan Hansen solves crimes on television, Kevin Hart: What suits and Cobra Kai. And with the incredible mellow debuting on YouTube this week, YouTube has already invested in hosting one of the best movies from 2018. The YouTube original is not dead – it's only changing. It goes back to the basics, too.

Variety's report indicates that YouTube's future programming will focus more on home-made YouTube stars, build programming around creators who have used the YouTube Platform to create original content and build their own audiences. And this might be the right choice – in a streaming market as crowded as the one that occupies power plants like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, YouTube has something they do not have. They have scrappy, oddball creators catering to all sorts of niche tastes you will not find anywhere else. Cobra Kai, while a good and well-received show could fly anywhere. Some of the more eclectic YouTube content feels unique and specific to their home.

Then again, it's a "little good, bad" situation. It's a bummer that YouTube Premium does not take the numbers to support a massive library of script content, but at least everyone will be able to check the original viewers, even with some ads. It's a bummer that they cut down on their scripting work, but I'm following great YouTube creators to know that investing in these smaller, faster personalities will pay out dividends if they're properly educated (I'm doing my best to pretend "Stars" as Logan Paul does not exist). YouTube does not go anywhere and it will be fascinating to see how they coexist in an increasingly busy market, where everyone who is in the market has a streaming service to sell us.
