There is whitewash in Hollywood, and then there is this – a studio exec thought it would be a good idea too Julia Roberts to play Harriet Tubman … according to the author of the NEW movie "Harriet."
script ~~ POS = TRUNC Gregory Allen Howard says that the ridiculous scene went down more than 25 years ago in a pitch meeting about the Tubman project. Howard says the exec said to the room … "This script is great. Let's get Julia Roberts to play Harriet Tubman."
Roberts was widely regarded as America's sweetheart at the time after playing in a number of hits such as "Steel Magnolias," "Pretty Woman," and "The Pelican Brief."
Howard says that when someone pointed out to the studio exec that Tubman was black and Roberts should not play the role, he replied … "It was so long ago. No one will know the difference."
Thankfully, Hollywood honcho did not come his way, and flashes until 2019 … Howard's film about the legendary abolition that led hundreds of slaves to freedom through the subway is finally in theaters.
Of course, the cast of the black British actress Cynthia Erivo where also criticized … because she is not African American. Can't please everyone.
BTW – Howard's best known for another hit movie that touches on race relations in America … "Remember the Titans."
