Here are the latest updates from Google Maps:
- Community feed in the app: This new feature allows Google Maps users to access the latest reviews, photos and posts added to Maps by people they follow and local experts. It’s like Yelp ( – but it will be available directly in the app. )
- Maps and Search Messages: Verified companies can send messages to customers directly from the app, allowing searchers to interact with companies and ask questions. Messages from customers will appear in the Company Announcements section of the app’s update tab.
- Performance insights for companies: This business-focused update will track how well a company is performing by measuring the number of customer engagement initiated from Maps and Search. This system provides news insights for corporate results and engagement with customers on Google.
- Street View photos added by users: Google Maps users can submit their own Street View images from their phones. Specifically, people can do this by recording a series of connected images as they move down a street or path. After the movie is recorded and published, Google automatically rotates, places, and combines the images.
With the new social features introduced by Google this month, Yelp’s competition with Google Maps is stronger than ever. And Yelp is well aware. In March, the company shared its long-standing complaints about Google at a hearing in the Senate Antitrust Subcommittee.
