The European Space Agency (ESA) said: "NEOs can potentially hit our planet and, depending on their size, cause significant damage.
“Although the chance of a large object hitting the earth is very small, it would cause a lot of destruction.
"NEO thus deserves active detection and tracking work."
Asteroid UK6 is a fairly large object that measures an estimated 48 to 110 m.
At the upper end of NASA's size estimate, the spacecraft is taller than Big Ben's Elizabeth Tower in Westminster, London.
At the lower end of the size estimate, the asteroid is comparable in height to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France.
