Left-back Behrang Safari had to jump in with half an hour left in Malmö FF’s 4-0 victory against Östersund. It was Safari’s last effort on a football field.
The Swede has a long and successful career behind him. He has made 31 international appearances for Sweden, and in addition to Malmö FF, has also represented Belgian Anderlecht and Swiss Basel.
In Basel, Safari made the biggest impression, and he was in the club two turns. First 2008-2011, and then 2013-2016. With the club, Safari won five Swiss league titles. Because of this, he is appreciated in Switzerland.
Hailed by Champions League winners
At least by the Swiss legendary tennis player Roger Federer, who sent a video greeting to Safari. The greeting was played for Safari and his teammates after the final signal at Eleda Stadium.
– I want to thank you for making my life better. It was always a pleasure to see you play, says Federer according to Sportbladet.
Federer, who is a big Basel supporter, and has won unlikely 20 Grand Slam titles. With that, he is by far the most successful tennis player of all time.
Among others who wanted to pay tribute to the left-back was former big player Walter Samuel, who played for Real Madrid and won the Champions League with Inter. Samuel and Safari were teammates in Basel.
Markus Rosenberg and Johan Dahlin also recorded a music video for the now football-retired Safari.
