The municipal council in Svedala says yes to a referendum on the planned prison building in the municipality, Sydsvenskan writes. The referendum will take place on May 26 next year, unless it becomes an extra choice to the Riksdag before.

Opponents of the prison started earlier this year a name collection for a referendum, and collected about 2 300 signatures. About 1,600 names, corresponding to ten percent of the voters, had been required to raise the issue in the City Council.
All parties are for a referendum, and the formal decision is taken in the City Council next week. The referendum is advisory and the General Assembly does not need to follow the result.
Three parties – the Swedish Democrats, the Christian Democrats and Älska Svedala – are in danger of imprisonment, while others are positive.
