Is the key to preventing neurodegenerative diseases in our intestines?

Researchers from Boston Hospital have studied how microorganisms in our intestine and their side products affect our brain cells. In particular, they focused on two types of brain cells, called microglia and astrocytes. These are cells that contribute, inter alia, to the maintenance of a strong immune system and are involved in the removal of dead or damaged cells. This helps reduce the risk of chronic inflammation in the body and many chronic diseases – including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Can probiotics help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease?

This was the first study in which a direct association between our intestinal flora (i.e., microbiomic) and said cells was shown. The results of the study thus suggest the theory that nutritional changes may be important in preventing neurodegenerative diseases. Further research will be needed before more specific guidelines can be developed. Researchers, for example, intend to start closer to a possible link between increased probiotic intake and reduce the risk of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.
