It's no secret to lose weight are big business. And when you think that approximately 45 million Americans are on a diet at a given time, it's not surprising that weight loss from dieting is often temporary. It is therefore important to choose a nutrition program that focuses on permanent changes rather than the number on the scale.
But how do you know if your weight loss is on the right track? INSIDERS asked the experts to give us the inside scoop on the 10 characters your weight loss is temporary.
Your diet is too restrictive.
Often, the first sign is that your weight loss is temporary to follow a diet that is not sustainable. "If you decided to lose weight through the crash diet, fasting or cutting important food groups out of your diet, you can lose weight, but when you resume a more typical food plan, the importance will return, says Dr. Olivia Rose, ND INSIDER.
Plus, if you go too low on your macronutrients and calories; Your weight loss will not be sustainable. "Your metabolism comes slowly, you need less and less food to maintain your weight, and you will eventually experience increased hunger, which can lead to a binge," Monica Auslander Moreno, MS, RD, Nutrition Consultant for RSP Nutrition told INSIDER.
You're annoyed all the time.
Losing weight is supposed to make you feel better, right? Well, if your weight loss occurs at a fast and furious pace, you're more inclined to be annoyed.
"Irritability comes with the weight loss area for some people, especially when the diet is not balanced with enough protein and carbohydrates and when you deprive yourself of the foods you like," Rose said.
You have not taken care of the mental and emotional aspects of your weight gain.
If you have physical or mental trauma that you live with or if you get stuck in an emotional eating pattern, Rose said this could be a sign that you can lose weight temporarily on a certain level, but you can regain weight when your Weight loss plan is over.
"It's always beneficial to seek a cognitive behavior therapist who can help you with strategies to combat emotional eating patterns so your weight loss can be part of a more permanent lifestyle," she added.
Your clothes do not fit differently.
Dr. Charlie Seltzer, MD, DABOM, CEP, a specialist in obesity medicine told INSIDES that five pounds of fat want to change the way the clothes fit. "If the scale is down, but you must tell people you lose (compared to telling them), the loss will not be permanent," he explained. In other words, use your clothes as a guide to determine how effective your diet is.
You took too much at once.
Have you ever noticed that there is always a honeymoon when you start a diet? It is usually during this short time window that you feel that you can tackle (and stick to) all the rules. Unfortunately, this setting often ends.
"Most diets ask us to review our entire lives on a weekend," explained Personal Trainer Brandice Lardner, explained to INSIDER. "How we shop, cook and eat everything has to change – immediately. However, we change in stages and not sweep." If you feel overwhelmed after starting a new diet, it's not your fault. Take a step back and work to change one thing at a time.
You have no maintenance plan after weight loss.
Ask someone with experience to lose and lose weight, and there is a good chance that they will tell you that it is not so hard to lose weight as to keep it away.
"Having a long-term exercise and nutrition plan to keep your weight loss usually leads to getting back all the weight," says T. Ghazarians to INSIDER.
You see this most in people who can not wait for their diet to be over. Rather than focusing on a lifestyle change, they're just thinking of losing weight as fast as possible so they can stop the diet.
You do not tan or get muscles.
Losing weight is one thing, but changing the body's composition is what helps with long-term weight loss.
"If you do not see your body looking more toned, your weight loss is likely to be only muscle mass," explained Auslander Moreno. "That means you do not do enough important exercises to build muscle or you do not absorb enough calories, fat and protein," she added.
You cut out all food groups.
Does your diet have a long list of foods that are limited? "Cutting out the entire food groups is one of the reasons why so many weight loss plans work – temporarily," says Lardner. "Making sweeping changes like cutting out entire food groups means leaving a gap of calories in your diet that leads to weight loss," she explained.
But Lardner reminded us that these plans are very difficult to keep track of in the long run and weight is often recycled (along with mental diet baggage about the particular food group).
You do not like the food you eat.
If you love to eat (and who does not?) It can be difficult to say good-bye to your favorite comfort food to lose weight.
"While you may" suck it "and live for boring dull and tasteless food, you will soon want to have good and satisfying meals," says Lardner. That's why it's better to incorporate some foods you enjoy in your weight loss plan and learn how to cook healthy, good food.
You have everything-or-nothing-thinking.
How many times do you promise yourself to start your diet on Monday, just to be out of it on Wednesday? "If you are" on or "off" your diet, it is almost guaranteed that your weight loss is temporary, says Lardner. Nobody can eat perfect every day, every meal.
"Accept to tie hands and decide to get back straight on the right track at the moment you notice you're confused," she added.
