A group of US researchers have identified a flu drug that can block the transmission of Covid-19 in 24 hours, according to a study published in the journal Nature Microbiology.
BUCHAREST, December 4 – Sputnik. A new flu drug, MK-4482 / EIDD-2801, called Molnupiravir, blocks the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, according to a study by a research group at Georgia State University and led by Richard Plemper.
According to the results published in the journal Nature Microbiology, Molnupiravir gives good results in the early stages of Covid-19 and has been shown to be effective against other RNA viruses.
Study on ferrets
The researchers conducted the study on ferrets infected with SARS-CoV-2, who received the drug twice daily orally.
“We analyzed the efficacy of therapeutically administered MK-4482 / EIDD-2801 to improve SARS-CoV-2 infection and block ferret transmission, as ferrets easily transmit the virus but show minimal clinical signs similar to the spread of the virus in the young human population. “, say the researchers in their study, quoted by Sputnik France.
Tests have shown that MK-4482 / EIDD-2801 prevented Covid-19 from developing into a severe form and can block the transmission of the virus within 24 hours.
Molnupiravir is currently in phase 2/3 of clinical trials, the researchers say. If its efficacy is confirmed, patients with Covid-19 will stop transmitting SARS-CoV-2 to others within 24 hours of starting treatment, the researchers hope.
