Sufjan Stevens is no stranger to original Christmas music. Now he has shared a new version of his extremely rare 2007 Christmas, "Lonely Man of Winter." Listen below.
In 2007, Stevens held "Sufjan Steven's Xmas Song Xchange Contest," where he invited fans to submit original songs as they recorded. He then chose his favorite, Alex Duffy's "Every Day is Christmas" and replaced his own original Christmas song, "Lonely Man of Winter", with Duffy, swapping rights to each song. Duffy and his friend Dave Mallory had for several years listening sessions for Stevens song instead of releasing it, but eventually he was busy with his non-commercial performance in Brooklyn, and Duffy asked Steven's label Asthmatic Kitty if they could finally release the song, by continuing to JACK. Tomorrow, the original version of "Lonely Man of Winter" is released digitally, along with this new version produced by Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman) and has a performance by Melissa Mary Ahern. Duffy's "Every Day is Christmas" (listen to it below) is also released. The two versions of "Lonely Man of Winter" will also be released as 7-inch on December 7th.
Stevens had this to say about Duffy's "Every Day is Christmas" in the Soundcloud record for the song: "I fell in love with a certain song because of it's happiness: Alec Duffy's" Every Day Is Christmas. " "It feels immediately like a classic show, the perfect companion song, a lackadaisical bar ballad and a church psalm. It's unjustified with the glorious and prophetic exclamation marks on Christmas, the most complicated holiday. Okay, I continue to spoil the Christmas blow, the tongue the fear of winter, the melancholic expectations of the year. And I am still wondering about the sanctuary, the subversive satire and the stupid nonsense of Christmas as a commodity, patterned with cartoon characters by Charlie Brown, Santa Claus and Rudolf. For me, the entertainment of these bi-polar fantasies never completely faded, they are fundamental to Christmas's mysteries. But when it came down to it, I just wanted the simple relief as usual, every day love, the love of two people, the kind of love that does not commit to the trumpet flies and jinglebells of Alec Duffy's unlimited song "Every Day Is Christmas" summarizes this simple phenomenon wit h the most easygoing of words and melodies, which in some way makes perfect sense from a meaningless holiday. Thank you, Alec, for this great gift. And Merry Christmas to you and yours! "
