Miss Universe Malaysia hopes to sail through finals in Bangkok, Malaysia News

PETALING JAYA – Regent Miss Universe Malaysia Jane Teoh will surely hope to sail through the Bangkok festival next month with her specially designed national suit called Bangau Perahu.

The three-piece garment RM7000 is based on an artistic interpretation of traditional Malaysian craftsmanship by designer Salleh Hamid.

Salleh, 30, said he spent six months creating a suit based on the boat's crane or sail protection, which is usually seen on traditional fishing boats in the east coast.

"I was inspired by the rich Malaysian cultural history and conviction, the authenticity of the artistic craft of archery in ancient times and the Malaysian species of awan larat (clouds) that are usually seen in the carvings," he added.

He said the suit was designed in three colors using ethylene-vinyl acetate foam and hopes people would appreciate it.

"I was nervous because of previous criticism of the costumes in previous competitions," he admitted.

However, he continued and decided to choose Bangau as fishermen thought it could protect them while working at sea.

(Last year Miss Universe Malaysia had a nasi lemak-inspired national costume, while Miss Universe Malaysia 2016 put on a jumpsuit with Petronas Twin Towers.)

Teoh, who paradeed the costume during a preview of Myeg Tower yesterday, said she felt "very good" wearing a pair of six inch boots designed by local shoemaker Rhea Tan Yen Yen.

"I am excited and proud to be able to carry these beautiful creations to represent my country," says Teoh, 21.

For the evening dress category, the financial and book student-cum model will wear a silver dress by designer Amar Madfie and Zeed Jameel, whose trademark is known as Amaze.

The top of the guard with a soft drapery and mermaid silhouette shows rows of handcrafted ornaments and intricate beads.

"The national costume is rich in Malaysian culture and the evening dress is not very good thanks to our talented designers," Teoh said, who spent a year preparing for the festival after being crowned in January.

Miss Universe Malaysia Organization, National Director, former beauty queen Datin Elaine Daly, expressed hope that Malaysia would win in the contest.

For the national gift auction segment where contestants bring memories from their respective countries auctioned for charity, Teoh presents a three-storey freshwater pearl necklace from Borneo Pearls classic collection.
