Miss Universe Japan is debuting the Sailor Moon ninja transformation dress as a national costume for 2018

Representing Japan at this year's competition is 22-year-old Yuumi Kato, which was crowned Miss Universe Japan 2018 at Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo on March 19th. As a representative of Mie for the National Festival, Nagoya-born Kato was chosen to represent Japan at the International Competition after showing that she was much more than just a beautiful face.

The young model, actress and reporter, raised by their parents in Malaysia from 5 to 13 years, floats in Japanese, English, Chinese and Malaysian and has also studied the art of the traditional Japanese ceremony.

After months of preparation for the Miss Universe performance, which will be held in Bangkok on December 17, Kato debuted her national suit at a press event in Tokyo on November 19th.

And not only will she dress like a magic anime girl on stage, she will also complete a conversion sequence as well. This clip shows how Kato will go out like a kunoichi or female ninja before she turns to reveal himself as Sailor Moon. At the Tokyo event, she cosplayed down the catwalk and received enthusiastic applause from the audience.

According to the organizers, the national costume the contestants should wear at the event "incorporate different ideas based on their own culture and traditions". A female ninja and Sailor Moon outfit fits perfectly in this description, and Kato himself says: "I am honored to be able to appear on stage like Sailor Moon, a character that has been loved not only in Japan but around the world for over 25 years."

After her suit debut, director Mime responding to questions from the event host, saying the decision to dress as an anime character was part of a desire to show "cool Japan" and the local cosplay culture to the world.

When the decision to cosplay on Miss Universe was made, makeup artist and self-known Sailor Moon fan Kodo made the proposal to Mima that Miss Universe Japan is transformed into Sailor Moon. The team then worked together to make the dream a reality, with the costume designer to create an outfit that would surprise people and leave a lasting impression on the judges.
