Argentina is mourning
Tears and sobs could be heard from the mourners of all ages and classes who had gathered from early in the morning to praise Maradona when his body was in state. Among the complaints was the football song, mainly among them: “¡Olé, olé, olé, olé, Die-go! Die-go! ”
Maradona’s body was held in a wooden coffin draped with the blue and white national flag and an Argentine strip with number 10 that had been part of his nickname “D10S” – a game on dios, the Spanish word for “god”. Fans threw flowers, football shirts and rosaries on the coffin while health workers distributed water among the huge crowds that stood under a punishing southern spring sun as they waited for them to enter.
