Why cars are not made of stainless steel: the answer is easier than you think

It would be great to have a car that is completely corrosion resistant, but it is also solid, safe and does not require much care. And do not think that stainless steel is not interested in the automotive industry at all.

The legendary "Delorean DMC-12" from 1981-1983 had an unrivaled stainless steel body. It has given it another distinctive function, just like the construction of the upright doors and Giorgetto Giugiaro's design is insufficient.

Stainless steel is widely used. It is likely that your kitchen sink, knife blade, stove and other items are also manufactured. Stainless steel is not completely corrosion resistant, but under normal circumstances, things made of it can last for hundreds or thousands of years without fail. Why is it not in the automotive industry?

The answer is actually not very complicated. We mentioned the Delorean DMC-12, which is very interesting, but look at the closest you will find that its surface is very rough.

The unmatched, glossy DMC-12 was extremely difficult to maintain, and the surface structure was very uneven. Many buyers have just painted their cars for an eye-catching shine.

In addition, the Delorean DMC-12 body is not made of stainless steel. Well, such metal plates are made of this metal, but behind them lies the fiberglass structure. Stainless steel teeth are so thin that structural features are not assigned to it.

Such a double body was heavy enough, but it would have been even more difficult if it was only made of stainless steel – this metal is very dense and solid.

When it comes to hardness, did you notice that Delorean DMC-12, your knives, cookware and other stainless steel items have similarities? All have straight lines and even surfaces.

This is because stainless steel is relatively difficult to form. It is of course possible – your sink is a good example. However, the formation of conventional steel is a much simpler and cheaper process. Stainless steel is also difficult to boil.

Finally, the stainless steel itself is quite expensive. People do not want to drive the same car forever.

They want to trade vehicles every year, and car makers want to sell as many cars as possible for as much profit as possible. Stainless steel bodies would be very expensive, and people would still get rid of these cars in time.

And options are better. Carbon-reinforced plastic is a material for future bodies. It is durable, but it can easily form complex shapes.

If the carbon fiber component puzzle is solved, the production process will be short.

On the other hand, conventional steel can be protected from rust, and it is successful now, so it's simply not necessary to switch to expensive, heavy, stainless and durable.
