The Ministry will assess the potential for local electricity generation

"Now, our goal is to objectively evaluate the plans for existing and potential electricity market players to develop new production capacity. After assessing market opportunities, measures will be taken to enable new and flexible power plants to be installed that ensure the reliability of the electrical system," said Energy Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas in a statement.

According to him, in the absence of sufficient incentives for the development of local production under market conditions, the government may take measures, for example, if you do not want to install new production capacity, a tender can be published (auction).

Market participants are invited to provide information on plans to develop power capacity of more than 10 megawatts and their expected start up to 2024.

The assessment of the Lithuanian electricity system's adequacy until 2030 by researchers at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) this year has shown that the country needs to develop reliable and affordable efficient local capacity.

In addition, the Baltic energy system from 2025 will start functioning in synchronism with continental European electricity networks, ensuring smooth operation and reliable power supply.
