During the event "The 5G Road for Communication Between Vehicles and Everything " organized by 5GAA – Automotive Association, Pirelli has presented "World's First 5G Enhanced ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) Services" where the use of is shown intelligent tires that can detect and share roadway information in a 5G network.
The demonstration was conducted in collaboration with Ericsson, Audi, Tim, Italdesign and KTH on the test track on the roof of Lingotto where a vehicle equipped with Pirelli Cyber Tires sensory tires and connected to the 5G network, it could transfer the risk of being detected by the tire to another incoming vehicle using an ultra-wide band and the low latency of 5G.
The tire, says one note, "is the only contact element between the vehicle and the road and thanks to the technology Pirelli makes perfect, it communicates with the vehicle, with the driver and tomorrow, thanks to the potential of 5G, with the entire road infrastructure."
The use of a Pirelli Cyber Tire tire, equipped with a sensor, in the near future will provide the vehicle with information on the model of coverage, mileage, dynamic load and for the first time potentially dangerous situations on the road surface, from the presence of water to poor adhesion.
Based on this information, the car can adapt their control and assistance systems to driving which greatly improves safety, comfort, performance levels and can also give the same indications to other vehicles and infrastructure.
This is not the first time experiments are being done on "smart" tires. In recent months we have actually seen a technology that can recover kinetic energy produced by tire deformation, tires that adapt to the weather conditions and Uptis, Michelin tires without air that do not puncture and last longer.
