The symptoms of flu and Covid-19 are very similar. But an American study managed to show that the first signs differ from one pathology to another. Helpful in times of seasonal flu?
The order of symptoms would be important. In any case, this is what an American study published in Sciencedaily claims.
In fact, researchers at the University of Southern California believe they have found the probable order in which the symptoms of Covid first appear.
A defined order
By studying and analyzing data from 55,924 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in China, all collected by the World Health Organization (WHO) between 16 and 24 February, and 1100 cases collected between 11 December 2019 and 29 January, compiled by China Medical Expert Expert Group, through the National Health Commission of China, they came to the conclusion that the first in order was fever, followed by cough, muscle aches, then nausea or vomiting and diarrhea.
Knowing the order of symptoms has several aspects: it can help patients to do heal faster, help doctor exclude other diseases and even plan how to treat patients and maybe intervene earlier in the disease.
“This order is especially important to know especially in times of seasonal diseases such as influenza that coincide with coronavirus infections,” explains Professor of Medicine Peter Kuhn who participated in the publication.
“And it can even reduce hospital stays for faster identification,” says Joseph Larsen, lead author of the study.
Covid fever, flu cough
To compare the order of the coronavirus symptoms with the flu, the researchers looked at data from 2,470 flu cases in North America, Europe and the southern hemisphere, which were reported to health authorities from 1994 to 1998.
According to its researchers the order for coronavirus is fever, then cough, followed by muscle pain, nausea and / or vomiting, then diarrhea.
For influenza, it’s first and foremost about cough, then fever.

The pathology gradually decreases or appears suddenly?
Institut Pasteur emphasizes that symptoms occur gradually over several days with coronavirus, unlike flu which suddenly begins “.
Barrier gestures to avoid everything
Remember that barrier gestures are always useful and even more so in times of flu. They will avoid catching or transmitting seasonal pathologies and they protect against the coronavirus.
Doctors also encourage people to get flu shots to make diagnoses easier.
The French government also listed the symptoms of Covid, stating that it was mainly fever or fever (chills, hot-cold), cough, headache, body aches and unusual tiredness.
But also by sudden loss of smell (without nasal congestion), a total disappearance of taste or even diarrhea. And in more serious forms: breathing difficulties that can lead to hospitalization in intensive care or even death.
