Safe sex, female condom and test for everyone: This is the "HIV-discriminatory" campaign launched by U. of Chile

At 9:00 am, a team from U. de Chile's Clinical Hospital (HCUCH) began the massive testing of HIV in Aulario Oriente at Juan Gómez Millas Campus, which gave the first kick to the preventive campaign "HIV no discriminates" initiatives led by the principal. HCUCH and Vicerrectoría de Extensión and Comunicaciones de la Casa de Bello.

While hundreds of students came to the exam, male and female condoms and consultants from healthcare professionals and students at the Medical Faculty, Matías Marín, student at the Institute for Communication and Image and founder of Círculo de Estudiantes were living with HIV, offered the talk "Living with HIV in Chile ", one year after being diagnosed with the virus, just in a test operation the university did in April 2018 in Central House.

"HIV is mainly transmitted here in Chile among young people, we university students are a key population, and the most important form of prevention is the use of condoms. I want to make an invitation to always use a condom and to take the sample. And if it comes out reactive or positive , we come from the student circle who live with HIV, that we provide all the support and information needed so that they can start the treatment as soon as possible, says Matías Marín.

Following the intervention of the journalist's third-year student, principal Ennio Vivaldi launched the new campaign for preventive campaigns on campus and its platform www.elvihnodiscrimina.cl

"This is a demonstration that our students care about us, that we are responsible for them and that we are not indifferent and we will not regret when complexities arise as they are for the life of a young person who inhibits HIV," says the principal. and adding "Whether or not they like it, we must accept the reality of the young chileans in their sexual lives, and on the basis of these objective information, we must take steps to prevent them from getting HIV".

Together with Chile's highest authority, Dr. Alejandro Afani, head of the HCUCH HIV Center and the Academy of the Faculty of Medicine, the initiative that describes the country's critical situation in relation to the control of this epidemic.

"Chile is currently the country of Latin America with the highest figures in relation to the increase in new cases diagnosed by HIV. The increase in the virus in Chile has been maintained from 2010 to 2017, when there were 5,816 new cases. Year 2018 discovered 6,948 New cases, and what has been around since 2019, are even higher than last year, so that what happens in our country is a crisis, "the specialist said, emphasizing that the new case is concentrated on young people between 15 and 29 years.

The director of the HIV center stressed that the reasons for this situation are the lack of structured sexual education in the early stages, the loss of fear of young people to a disease currently being treated and the low use of condoms.

From the students, Emilia Schneider, chairman of the FECh Interim Committee, joined the campaign and stressed "campaigns like these we do at the University of Chile, for undoubtedly the rise of HIV in the country has to do with years of abandoned state, public policy lacking in this subject, and the position we currently have as students is that extensive sexual education is needed as right at all levels of education ".

With regard to the HIV test and the operations that have been carried out since 2017 in Chile in Chile for the free diagnosis of the university community and citizenship, Dr. Carla Bastías, head of the laboratory for immunology at HCUCH, has then performed more than 5,000 tests.

On the results of the samples, he informed that when these operations began in 2017 at the HCUCH, "until December 31, 2018, 4,449 tests were performed, of which 66 were reactive and of these 57 were confirmed by the Institute of Public Health, which gave us a 1, 1 percent prevalence. we discount the patients in this group who have previously been confirmed by the ISP, we have a prevalence of 1 percent, which is a very high level compared to what is described internationally for Chile. "

Finally, the director of the clinical hospital, Graciela Rojas, also revealed at Campus Juan Gómez Millas that the university hospital "plays a very important role in the main problems of public health in the country", which is training ". And this is one of them."
