More than 1,500 pets were vaccinated against rabies in the region

A health authority conducted a positive assessment after the end of the massive vaccination operations against rabies carried out in 11 municipalities in the region.

The purpose of the activity was to prevent rabies, a viral zoonosis characterized by acute encephalomyelitis, with a mortality rate of 100%, even when exceptional cases of recovery are described. The transfer occurs through the animal's saliva through a piece or contact with the mucous membranes or wounds when it is in the nervous system. The animals that can transmit this disease can be bats, dogs, foxes, that is, warm blooded animals.

The balance of the Alejandro García Health Authority was positive. "These rabies operations carried out in conjunction with our Health Seremi and the municipalities in the three provinces of the region could vaccinate 1,539 pet, which means it was a major operation very important so that society can prevent rabies."

In addition, the health authorities emphasize the importance of the operation, and noted, "So far, we have received 52 stroke samples taken by the community, which have been sent to the public health institute, of which 4 were positive. Therefore, it is important to keep the vaccination card updated with our pets."

The operations were carried out in 11 municipalities in the region such as Canela, Coquimbo, La Serena, La Higuera, Punitaqui, Ovalle, Salamanca, Los Vilos, Paihuano, Illapel and Vicuña.
