Mazda has given the CX-5 a new, powerful turbocharged engine, as part of a comprehensive update.
It's not as if the CX-5 slums on the sales charts – far from it. Last month it was the best-selling car in its class, with 2000 examples of finding a new home.
The main change is the addition of a 2.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine to the option list of top-specific CX-5 GT and Akera.
Unlocked from the medium-sized Mazda 6-sedan and large CX-9 SUV pumps the engine 170kW power and 420Nm torque. It is connected to a six-speed automatic gearbox, power supply to all four wheels.
Pricing has not yet been demonstrated, but the turbocharged petrol option is worth an additional $ 1300 over the existing natural aspirated engine. Expected to see the turbo option add a similar amount as the CX-5's sticker.
The existing 2.5 liter natural aspirated gasoline engine and 2.2-liter dual-turbo diesel engines from existing line-up are both still available.
There are upgrades beyond the new new engine. Mazda has added a range of active safety features throughout the range, with adaptive cruise control, auto headlight, lane maintenance and drive monitoring on the CX-5 specification.
Behind the wheel, Mazda has added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto throughout the range, as part of its MZD Connect infotainment system. The technology was debuted on the larger CX-9 earlier this year, but has so far been out of reach of new CX-5 buyers.
All knobs and switches around the cabin have been redesigned for a more exclusive look, with Mazda choosing a knurled finish. How much Bentley of the brand.
The air conditioners have been moved to a smoother, narrower single panel on the middle stack, while high quality cars have been treated for upgrades like real woodcarvings, a frame-mounted rear-view mirror and ventilated front seats.
A 7.0-inch screen is located in the middle of the front display and there is LED-surrounding lighting around the interior. The changes make the car in line with the advanced "Exclusive Mode" variant announced last month in Japan.
Whatever interior decoration, there are meaningful changes that lurk under the skin. Mazda says it's refined car steering and tweaked suspension bushings, as it aims to deliver a "higher quality feel" on the move.
According to Mazda Australia, the center of the CX-5 Maxx Sport will report the majority of sales (34 percent), followed by the second top GT (21.5 percent) and Akera (20 percent).
Although the new turbocharged engine is the exciting development, the majority of sales are expected to go to the existing 2.5 liter natural aspirated petrol engine (48 percent).
About 12 percent of sales are expected to go to the new turbo and the rest comes to diesel. A lot of 98 percent of the cars come with an automatic, while 72 percent are likely to be four-wheel drive.
