Huawei plans to plan a voice assistant to compete internationally with Siri and Alexa

Is there space on the market for another voice assistant? Huawei seems to believe it. Richard Yu, CEO of the company's consumer industry, told CNBC in a new interview that it plans to make globally available a voice platform for smart speakers and smartphones.

"We use ourselves in China, in [the] In the future, we will also have our own outside China, "Yu told the publication." Initially, we mainly use Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, [but] We need more time to build our AI [artificial intelligence] services … Later we will expand this outside of China. "

It is Huawei's second voice assistant after Xiaoyi, a China-only offer available through Huawei's combined smartphone / wireless hotspot – AI Cube – which made its debut in September under IFA 2018 and it recently announced the Huawei AI speaker.

Yu refused to say which language the next assistant should use or when it may be available, but eventually assume it makes arriving, Huawei's proprietary equalizer technology can improve sound. Both the AI Cube and Huawei AI speakers (except Huawei smartphones) come with Histen (pronounced "High-Sen"), a range of features that include virtual bass, linear phase equalization and adaptive gain control.

Whatever Huawei's voice platform is facing an upward battle against commanders like Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant. According to a new Canalys report, Amazon has 31.9 percent of the world's smart speakers, followed by Google with 29.8 percent, Alibaba with 11.1 percent and Xiaomi with 9.7 percent. Meanwhile, Baidu announced last month that DuerOS, its natural language processing platform, is now installed on over 150 million units and has more than 35 million monthly active users.

Recruit manufacturers and developers to support the unnamed assistant promises to be equal (if not significantly more) challenging. Amazon's Alexa and Alexa Voice Service have more than 50,000 third-party applications and 3,500 brands signed – not to mention compatibility with 20,000 smart home appliances. Google Assistant works with over 10,000 devices over 1000 brands. And DuerOS runs on more than 110 units from 200 companies, counting more than 16,000 active contributors among the developing community.

With voice assistant usage predicted to grow 1,000 percent to 275 million in 2023, Huawei hopes to clearly understand what remains of the ground floor. If successful, the game can play good exchanges – the global smartphone market can be worth as much as $ 30 billion in 2024, according to Global Market Insights.
