Endocrinologist: The mortality from COVID-19 in people with diabetes is three times higher – Diseases

There is probably a higher risk of COVID-19 infection in people with diabetes. But there is really a higher risk of serious illness, mechanical ventilation and mortality. The mortality rate in people with diabetes is three times higher. This was stated by endocrinologist Professor Zdravko Kamenov in “Offensive with Lubo Ognyanov” on Channel 3.

Diabetes itself leads to the suppression of the immune system. The presence of high blood sugar levels leads to glycation of antibodies. Hyperglycemia causes glycation of the receptors on the cells that the coronavirus captures. Diabetes mellitus leads to micro- and macrovascular disorders. 2/3 of people with diabetes die of cardiovascular disease.

Prof. Kamenov noted that the injuries were first in the lungs – pneumonia, fibrosis. Then comes the cytokine storm. Biologically active substances are released. The risk of coagulation in the smallest vessels increases. Diabetes itself changes platelets.

Both types of diabetes are equally risky when it comes to more difficult processes. Type 1 develops at a younger age. In type 2, the social and health burden is greater. Decompensation of diabetes is a very important thing, said the endocrinologist.

Women generally have protection against cardiovascular disease until menopause. This equalizes the risk for both men and women. The average life expectancy for women is longer.

“Half of the people in the intensive care units have high blood sugar. Of these 50 percent, only 5% have diabetes after years. This indicates acute hyperglycemia due to the disease,” says Professor Zdravko Kamenov.

His view is that when an immunostimulant is taken, it can not be focused on doing the job. It is reserved for immune stimulants. Prevention is the observance of measures.

“In a state of prediabetes, things are reversible, but usually type 2 diabetes is detected too late. It can manifest itself in different ways. There are several symptoms that occur – increased fluid intake, food, fatigue. These things can focus on blood sugar testing. “

Preventive antibiotics are definitely harmful, the professor said. They affect bacteria, not viruses. The task of the virus is to destroy an organ’s defenses to start secondary bacterial infections. In this situation, an antibiotic should already be taken.

“There is no joke when using heparins and anticoagulants. In primary prophylaxis, the gastroenterological departments are filled with wounds and gastritis.”

Applied as needed and taken by the right people, blood plasma is likely to have a beneficial effect, according to the endocrinologist.

Regarding the importance of the Bulgarian, Professor Kamenov said that Bulgarians are ranked 10th in Europe in obesity. 2/3 of the population is overweight and obese. Obesity is a disease. The body mass index is 18-25 normally. Obesity is between 25 and 30 and over 30 is obesity. The index is calculated because kilos are divided by height in meters and square.
