São Paulo begins to vaccinate against yellow fever

The city of São Paulo will vaccinate against yellow fever in airfields this month. Bus terminals, train stations and subway stations as well as large circulation sites in the central region will be points for immunization.

The goal is to reach 95% of the state-of-the-art vaccination cover, currently 58.5%. The initiative is part of a series of measures to combat arbovirus – which also includes Zika virus and dengue fever – in summer and rainfall. The vaccine remains available at all basic health units in the municipality.

On Saturday (10) there are the airports in Largo do Cambuci and Faculdade Hotec, both in the central region. In order to receive the dose, it is necessary to carry an identification document and, if possible, a vaccination card and a card from the Unified Health System (SUS).

Those who intend to travel to the areas recommended by the vaccine should receive the dose at least 10 days before travel date. This is the time it takes for the body to produce the antibodies to the disease.

Since September last year, when the vaccination campaign began in the municipality, 6.8 million doses were applied to yellow fever.

The region with the highest coverage is north, with 88.7% of the population vaccinated, followed by south by 68.9%, then west (57.6%), east (42.6%) and southeast (43, 1%). The central region has the lowest coverage, by 23.2%.

Six deaths

By 2018, the capital registered 13 autochthonous cases (acquired in the municipality) of yellow fever, six of which resulted in death. In addition, 107 imported cases were recorded.

The municipal health department warns that in recent months the disease has been stabilized due to low temperatures, but the trend is that new cases arise during the summer's arrival.

It is also noted that the city registered a new epizootic (death of a Sagui) in Anhanguera Park in the first half of September. This indicates that the virus circulates in the capital.

indication

The vaccine against yellow fever is not indicated for children under 9 months, pregnant women, women who are breastfeeding up to 6 months and patients with immunodepressants of any type: cancer, HIV, treatment with immunosuppressive drugs (corticosteroids, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunomodulators) or who have undergone organ transplantation. The doubt must undergo a medical evaluation.

Vaccination flyers can be checked on the website of the Municipal Health Secretariat.
