NASA aims to send a manned mission to the moon in 2028 – which makes it the first time people have traveled there since 1972.

The space agency said it was "due to accomplishing more than we have ever been able to achieve in the past", as President Trump presented a new budget.

The budget – $ 705m less than last year – will "continue to build the key components of the exploration campaign that sends astronauts to the moon and beyond," NASA said.

The budget includes a new space station "Lunar Gateway" that will pave the moon in the mid-2020s and the budget for a manned mission to the moon by 2028.

"For the first time in over 10 years, we have money in this budget to return to the moon with people," said NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine.

"I speak human rankers, compatible with Gateway, which can go back and forth to the moon's surface.

"The moon is the proven ground; Mars is the goal of the horizon."
