The body of the flaming hearse in Paarl was not burned by the fire – the municipality



The body inside a hearse that was lit on Saturday morning in Paarl East was not injured, Drakenstein municipality confirmed on Sunday morning.

Spokeswoman Riana Geldenhuys had originally said in a statement that the fire on Saturday morning had damaged the vehicle significantly and that the body of the person inside was also burned.

In an updated statement on Sunday, she said the funeral director had confirmed that the body had not been burned as previously reported.

She said:

While all indications are that the devastating fire that caused severe damage to the hearse and coffin it carried in Paarl East … also damaged the body in the coffin, the funeral home has since confirmed to Drakenstein’s municipality that this was not the case.

Drakenstein City Fire Department warned of the burning vehicle on Broadway Street around noon. 08:14 on Saturday.

Pictures and videos of the blazing hearse also went viral on social media platforms.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and managed to extinguish the flame.

Geldenhuys said at the time that no injuries had been reported and that the cause of the fire would be the subject of a police investigation.
